The design process has always been central to construction. It brings to life a structure that will soon emerge from the ground.

While construction management and project management have traditionally been associated with actual construction, design review and management is a newer concept that is less understood. It’s the conversion of two cultures: the culture of design and the culture of management.

Involvement in the design process demands effective management to ensure close collaboration between the Employer and the designer.

While the Contractor’s design managers deal with clash detection, responses to requests for information, builders work openings executed on site in the wrong position, and management of design changes, what is needed is pre-construction design activities that start in the design phase of a project.

The effectiveness of managing the completion of drawings, coordination of MEP works by sequentially overlaying multiple drawings of various trades using priorities – commencing with HVAC dry system, followed by HVAC wet system, plumbing system, fire protection, electrical systems, and finally control and telephone/data systems, constructibility of the project, clash detection and budget will make the difference between a successful project and one that’s plagued with cost overruns, delayed schedules and endless claims by the Contractor.
